I don’t know how many consultants I have worked with over the years but I have forgotten about most of them. The few who live long in the memory usually do so for very bad or very good reasons. Dave is certainly a memorable experience for all the right reasons. Reliable, highly structured, disciplined are some of the attributes that define Dave’s approach. These combine well with his rare skill of being able to distil highly complex projects into simple, digestible deliverables that are articulated at the appropriate level depending upon audience. On time and on budget go without saying with Dave but it’s refreshing to see such pride and energy poured into a project from an external resource. I’ll certainly be asking Dave to pick up another project for us in future.

In 2017 Davies & Robson were appointed to assist in the re tendering of the delivery operation. This was a complex task involving four manufacturing sites and multiple services including dedicated vehicles, subcontractors and pallet and parcel traffic. The core fleet consists of some 50 motive vehicles and 60 drivers. The project required a multi functional team in order to address the various strands of the outsourcing requirement. Dave was responsible for leading the determination of the operational requirement, evaluating the operational solutions and assisting in the structure and negotiation of the commercial agreement. In his role as Interim Project Manager Dave was also responsible for leading the implementation of a new contract with XPO. The operation successfully went live on the 25th February 2018. Dave's knowledge of operations and third party logistics made him an ideal member of a multi functional team that brought together a deep insight of Wavin's requirements with best industry practice.

We worked with Dave on a large scale complex logistics solution. The customers aim was to take their supply chain through a significant transformation, creating a platform which met the current needs of the business but critically ensured future flexibility to meet the market changes. Dave ensured that during the review an in depth knowledge of the business and its requirements were clearly articulated to ensure understanding and fairness. Following the decision to initiate the transition, Dave was pivotal in supporting the programme from inception to steady state.

In my previous role as Supply Chain Director responsible for UK, Ireland and France, I have worked with Dave Boulton for over 5 years. Dave reported to me in his role as Logistics Manager UK & Ireland. The business in general, and in particular the distribution function, has been through transformational change from 2012 into 2017 and Dave played a pivotal role in delivering this.
The first major change was implementing the business on SAP, where Dave successfully lead the SAP WMS key-user team of the logistics operation across 7 sites. With his practical experience in warehousing and transport, Dave was also the driver behind a program ‘Delivering Safely’ working with our customers to create a longer term partnership around safety in logistics. This successful initiative has now found traction in our wider European business.
When our shareholder signed off on a major investment plan to reconfigure the UK business, Dave was the lead for re-defining the distribution footprint including servicing offering and implementing changes to the transport partnership. This 2 year program, with subsequent further incremental improvement steps prepared by Dave in 2017, led to significant freight cost reductions and improved the reliability of the service to our customers.
Dave’s been successful in working with various business stakeholders, internal and external, and bringing them along through significant change. His strength is based on a deep understanding of logistics and transport and his ability to be practical and focus on delivering concrete change rather than theoretical opportunities.

Dave and I have worked together for many years, successfully delivering change in an operational context and making improvements to systems and processes. Dave has a rare quality of being an excellent sparring partner, which drives credible solutions. This was demonstrated most recently in the delivery of a significant tendering process to identify a suitable highly complex and detailed process saw the contract awarded to XPO Logistics. Dave and I worked with Davies & Robson to plan, formulate and deliver a robust tendering process that ensured the overall business strategy was cascaded through to the final agreed solution. Dave played a fundamental role in stakeholder management, contract negotiation and the development of an objective decision making process, ensuring that business objectives were translated into a customer centric delivery proposition for Wavin UK. Finally Dave successfully managed the implementation from cross-over to steady state.
Dave’s warmth and sincerity compliment his practical and logical reasoning, and this cultivates an effective and collaborative environment for any project team that he leads.
